Millions of Filipino students still lack classrooms, but there’s a faster, cheaper way to build them.

Executive Director Raffy Magno presented Angat Buhay’s low-cost, fast-build classroom model at today’s public hearing of the Senate Committee on Basic Education.

“Civil society has long proven that we can build quality classrooms faster and at a lower cost,” he said, explaining how Angat Buhay constructs a fully furnished classroom with fans, boards, chairs, and initial school supplies for only ₱800,000 to ₱1.1 million in just three to four months.

The longer we delay, the more we condemn the next generation to a broken system. Each peso wasted and each day lost reflect neglect, and when that neglect robs children of their future, it becomes a failure our nation cannot and must not accept.”

TRAINING FOR OUR MENTAL HEALTH CHAMPIONS 🧠

The mental health crisis has long plagued the Philippines, as evidenced by the 3.6 million Filipinos suffering from various mental health issues nationwide. This figure, provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), is supported by findings from our Bayanihan E-Konsulta program, which show a rise in mental health concerns among individuals of all ages.

Yet with less than one mental health practitioner for every 100,000 Filipinos, access to care remains a pressing challenge.

To help bridge this gap, Angat Buhay is launching Angat Kahimati—a community-based mental health program that provides localized psychosocial support to those in need.

We began this initiative with a facilitators’ training to equip local community leaders with the skills to integrate mental health support into their programs. The pilot implementation will take place in Naga City, recently recognized as a Universal Health Care (UHC) Implementing Site.

Angat Kahimati is made possible through the invaluable support of the Ateneo de Naga University Psychology Department, particularly its faculty who serve as our Mental Health Coaches, and our Clinical Supervisor, Hon. Gayle Abonal-Gomez.
