To strengthen its reading literacy initiative, Angat Buhay, in partnership with the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Education, held a series of volunteer tutor training sessions for the Bayan Ko, Titser Ko (BKTK) Program.
The training sessions were designed to equip volunteer tutors with the right knowledge and tools to help learners who struggle with reading. A key focus was the proper implementation of the BKTK assessment and instructional kits, a resource developed by the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies – Education Research Program.

WHY TRAINING SESSIONS MATTER
Training sessions are a fundamental part of the “Bayan Ko, Titser Ko” (BKTK) program. They empower tutors with the skills and knowledge to deliver a high-quality literacy intervention. The training focuses on the foundational theories of reading, writing, and assessment, as well as providing practical guidance on using program materials. This helps tutors turn theory into practice.
These sessions also create a collaborative space for volunteer tutors to share best practices and build a professional network. By equipping local volunteers with new skills, the program ensures its positive impact on education will continue long after the project ends, as tutors can share their knowledge with peers and future colleagues. This approach promotes sustainability through the transfer of knowledge, ensuring a lasting legacy for the program.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Bayan Ko, Titser Ko (BKTK) is Angat Buhay’s flagship literacy program, which is a targeted intervention addressing foundational reading gaps among early grade learners.
Designed to support Grade 2 pupils in public elementary schools who have been identified as struggling or non-readers, BKTK is implemented during the first six months of the school year. It aims to raise literacy proficiency, reinforce the critical role of parents and guardians in learning continuity, and cultivate a community-wide commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind in reading and comprehension.
